Austral Kings 2026

As we close out another remarkable season at Austral Kings Camp, we look back on a year defined by a strong and consistent run, dynamic river conditions, and the enduring rewards of adaptability. Every week brought its own challenges — and its own triumphs.

A Strong Start - The 2026 season got off to a promising start. Fresh fish were already entering the system by early February, and by March the run had reached full stride, delivering some of the most reliable fishing windows we have seen in recent years.

The Advantage Of Dropping Water - River conditions fluctuated throughout the season — and, crucially, that variability worked in our favor. Dropping water levels consistently triggered the best action, with fish becoming noticeably more active and responsive as the river receded. Extended periods of stable, flat water were a different story: slower, more demanding, requiring greater patience and precision from every angler. Reading those shifts — and moving quickly to capitalize on them — became one of the defining skills of the season.

Techniques & Tactics That Made A Difference - Despite the strong run, success was never guaranteed. Triggering strikes from fish that do not feed in freshwater always demands technical rigor: precise presentation, disciplined depth control, and the willingness to make small adjustments until something clicks. Heavy sinking lines were arguably the biggest tactical differentiator this season. Getting flies down fast and holding the correct depth through the entire swing proved decisive, particularly during periods of fluctuating water. Anglers who mastered this consistently outperformed those who didn't.

Fly Selection -  reinforced what we've come to trust over the years: medium- to small-sized patterns in pink, pink-and-orange, chartreuse, and silver accounted for fish across the full range of conditions.

A Strong Finish to the Season - Toward the end of the season, persistent rain pushed water levels higher — but the fishing never faltered. Fresh ocean fish kept arriving, and the action held strong right through the final days.

Numbers & Quality of King Salmon - The season delivered on its promise. Numbers were there, quality was there, and for most guests, so was the fish of a lifetime — or at least the story of one.

Average Size & What it Means - The average size ran smaller than in previous years, which came as a surprise given the volume and consistency of the run. Most fish fell in the 15–30 lb range, with the majority concentrated between 20 and 25 lbs. Far from a disappointment, this distribution is a genuinely encouraging sign: it points to strong recent reproduction cycles and favorable ocean conditions supporting a healthy, growing population.

King of the Season - The season's largest landed salmon weighed 43 lbs — an exceptional fish by any measure. Several substantially larger fish were hooked and lost, leaving behind the kind of moments that linger long after the trip ends.

Tidal Zone Fishing - Fishing in the first kilometers above the tidal zone once again delivered exactly what it's known for: bright, powerful, ocean-fresh salmon with every bit of their strength intact.

Infrastructure & Comfort -  Structural and aesthetic improvements across the facilities enhanced comfort and the overall guest experience.

Fleet & Energy Upgrades - A new aluminum boat was added to the fleet to improve access, efficiency, and safety across different river sections. A new generator significantly upgraded the camp's energy capacity and reliability.

At the Table - Cuisine was consistently praised by guests as a seasonal highlight. We're genuinely proud of the quality of the table.

Autstral Guides - Behind every great week on the water is a team that makes it possible. Our guides remain one of the Austral Kings' most important assets — and this season showed why.

Experience That Shows - Their ability to read the river, adapt to shifting conditions, and refine technique in real time is the product of years of hard-won experience. Every season they grow, and that growth shows. Beyond the fishing, they shape the entire experience — their commitment, knowledge, and genuine care for every guest are something no piece of equipment can replicate.

This season reminded us, once again, that great fishing is earned. It rewards observation, patience, and the willingness to trust the process — whether the river is dropping fast or sitting stubbornly still.

What doesn't change is the feeling guests leave with. Every one of them departed with the same thing: the intention to return.

We're already planning for 2027, and we can't wait to do it all again.

Austral Kings remains as one of the most exceptional locations I have had the pleasure to fish.  The scenery is jaw-dropping; the journey to the lodge and the river is an adventure in itself; the green tinge of the water is transfixing and when the sun is shining vibrant beyond belief.  These are all just some of the sumptuous characteristics that make up a fishing trip to this beautifully isolated part of Southern Chile.  Naturally it is the appeal of the fishing that provides the ultimate draw.

Fishing for King Salmon, regardless of where you go, requires patience and perseverance.  Results are never guaranteed.  As the size of fish goes up, the numbers of fish naturally go down, and King Salmon sit at the very apex of that chart.  When you see a big King Salmon move in the water it is enough to make you tremble with anticipation and desire, to feel your line go tight.

To tame a King you have to apply brute force at a level that an Atlantic Salmon angler would find hard to comprehend.  The bulk of the fish caught at Austral are fresh from the ocean and very very powerful.  I would go as far as saying too powerful for the uninitiated.  Large boulders, deep runs and a good current in many of the pools make landing one of the bigger fish an exceptional achievement.  Individual catches have to be considered against these factors as it is far easier to lose one of these trophies than it is to land them.  Skill but equally a good proportion of luck needs to be on your side.

Land just one of these fabulous fish, amidst these surroundings, and you will have a story and a memory that will stick with you forever!
