The mighty Rio Santa Cruz is home to the only steelhead runs on the whole Atlantic coast. From February to May chrome bright steelhead between 8 and 25lbs enter the river from the ocean in huge numbers. This majestic waterway rises in the huge glacier fed Lagos Argentinos in the Andes and then carves its way for over 360kms through the sere brown Patagonian plains to the Atlantic Ocean. The milky blue appearance and latent power of the river create a striking impression resulting in a steelhead fly fishery like no other.
Pioneers in the 1900’s introduced rainbow trout originating from California’s McCloud River. Forgotten and virtually untouched by the hand of man these fish were allowed to flourish and now represent probably the single largest untapped steelhead resource in the world. Steelhead on the Santa Cruz hit the fly hard and as befits their powerful environment often run out huge lengths of line in acrobatic fashion. Steelhead have often been credited as being one, if not the, hardest fighting migratory fish and the specimens in Santa Cruz are no exception.
Anglers will use powerful zodiac boots to navigate the river with mile after mile of unfished water at your disposal. Although the Santa Cruz river is a powerful and initially intimidating river it is not a pre-requisite in most areas to cast an especially long line as the fish will lie wherever there is a reasonable break from the main flow of the river, along seams and natural lies. Some locals even have a preference for single-handed rods over doubles. Sinking lines are used as standard with typical large profile Steelhead flies being the most effective in the milky glacial water. There are 4 different beats with 30 named pools and you will rotate amongst these depending on the conditions.
A purpose built fishing cabin/lodge, part of the very impressive Los Plateados Estancia has been constructed alongside what has proved to be the most productive part of the river. The building is straightforward and comfortable sleeping four anglers in two double rooms. Simple but pracctical lodging, a nice sheltered veranda looking onto the river, good Argentinean food with steaks, lamb assados and house wine and beer on tap make it a great base to fish this exciting river.
Guests fly into Rio Gallegos on the early am flight on Sunday and from there will be collected and driven to the lodging at San Ramon estancia arriving around midday. Following lunch and a briefing you will have a full afternoon’s fishing. Monday to Thursday, a typical day covers the daylight hours from 8.30 am until 7 pm with a cooked river-bank lunch being prepared each day. On Friday you will have a morning and afternoon fishing session, being driven back to the airport at Rio Gallegos that afternoon.
Pioneered by Claudio Martin, one of the longest standing guides on the Rio Gallegos river, Claudio has put together a team of guides that speak good English and are as enthusiastic about the river as the fish. The guides are all ardent fly-anglers and casting instructors and will happily help you improve your casting as much as the fishing itself. As standard you can expect a professional service, dedication and good company

If ever there was a time to have an Audible talking book subscription, then I would suggest a trip to Argentina might be a good time to consider it. There is no getting away from the size of Argentina and the lengthy journeys that are involved. The domestic flight from Buenos Aires to Southern Patagonia is ...
Pira Lodge in the Ibera Marshlands in Argentina was where “it all started”! It was the first dedicated lodge focused on catching Dorado and was the training ground for both many of the guides and experts who have taken that knowledge to other parts of South America. It was the lodge that put Dorado on the ...
Organising fishing holidays may seem a little sedate compared to the experiences I had gained in almost a decade’s service in Her Majesty’s armed forces of the British army. That said, two or three weeks spent in Argentina every year was just about enough to satisfy at least some of my sense of adventure and the ...
Following on from a week at Jurassic Lake, Lago Strobel with an outlandish tally of 1,100 Trout, in 6 days averaging 6-10lbs in weight Paul and his team of three head to the equally rewarding but infinitely more challenging Rio Gallegos River. ...
"After three amazing weeks fly fishing two of the hottest fishing destinations in southern Argentina, my cup is full. Before these action packed recollections fade into lifelong memories rich on emotion but scant on detail, I am writing to reflect on what we experienced, consolidate new found knowledge and perhaps help others ...
To my mind the Sea Trout fishing in Argentina has no equal. Each year the Rio Grande and Rio Gallegos Rivers entice anglers to travel an unquestionably long distance in the hope of securing what will almost certainly be a personal best fish whilst staying in some of the finest fishing lodges on the planet. As with all fishing, ...
There is little to compare the Sea Trout fishing in both Patagonian Argentina and slightly further South on the Tierra del Fuego. The character and style of the fishing is unique. The average size of the Sea Trout is without equal; typically 7-9lbs and the real monsters are record breakers. The take is often ferocious and they ...
The Sea Trout fishing in Southern Argentina is legendary and for many the Rio Grande epitomizes this. Situated in Tierra del Fuego, (Land of Fire), it is in as remote and isolated an area as you can imagine. Apart from the other fishing lodges there is little in the way of human habitation with sheep being the primary ...
The Sea Trout fishing in Southern Argentina is legendary and for many the Rio Grande epitomizes this. Situated in Tierra del Fuego, (Land of Fire), it is in as remote and isolated an area as you can imagine. However amidst this hauntingly desolate environment is probably the greatest Sea-Trout river on the planet and if further ...
“In the beginning there was Jurassic Lake…and all who came were awe-struck by the wilderness, the size and the numbers of Rainbow Trout. But in 2018, WhereWiseMenFish in conjunction with Solid Adventures, the founding team behind Jurassic Lake, created Eagle Valley Lodge. All who came were in awe!” The Secret Angler-Feb ...

Anglers stay in first-class comfort as well as having the option to fish numerous rivers and lakes, all with very high-quality fishing.
