We touched down into Caracas on October 29th, the same day Hurricane Sandy made landfall on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States causing havoc, devastation and misery. The tail still had a sting as driving rain rocked the plane on its landing gear as we came to a halt opposite the terminal buildings. Mark Wengler, renowned windsurfing photographer who had accompanied us wondered whether the Danish winter was such a bad alternative whilst Tania, my wife, questioned her decision to join us on a very much fishing focussed holiday...

I am sure I am not alone in saying that the quest for big fish is for many fishermen a mix between addiction and obsession. If you fall into either category then a week on the Atlantic Salmon Reserve may well be the drug that drives this lust to new lengths. One 40 pound salmon, two 30 pounders and eight PB’s (Personal Bests) amongst the group of 12 guided anglers along with a final tally of 147 salmon made it a hugely memorable week....

Water conditions for this early week on the Rynda left guides, and veterans alike in astonishment. Most of the snow melt had gone and the water levels had already dropped down to a height where salmon could run the entire length of the river. Although the fish had not spread throughout the river system in serious numbers it allowed everyone to fish almost all the pools with confidence and enjoy the spectacular upper section of the river, normally off-bounds to fresh salmon for another 2 weeks.

For the last decade almost all saltwater fishing in Cuba has been focused along the south coast, the fabulous Jardines de la Reina, Cayo Largo and Isla de la Juventud. This is not to say that fishing has not been conducted elsewhere or indeed that there is not considerable potential outside of these areas but rather there simply have not been any focused operations dedicated to the demands of fly-fishermen. WhereWiseMenFish went to investigate the newly established fly-fishing at Cayo Paredon on the North Coast & Las Salinas in teh Zapata National Park.

Atlantic Salmon fishing in Iceland is quite different in style to many of the other great salmon fishing countries. Very clear water, small flies, single-handed rods and spectacular scenery are combined with rivers which at times can be literally boiling with fish. It is nothing but exciting however as with all fishing getting the best out of your fishing holiday to Iceland requires an in depth understanding of how to fish, when to fish and where to fish.

The opportunity to fish on the Saryu River in Northeastern India was truly a dream come true. As a child, I had eagerly read about Jim Corbett's exploits hunting the great man eating leopards of India. When The Angling Report announced they were seeking volunteers to evaluate this fishery, I immediately jumped at this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. My quarry was to be India's legendary golden mahseer on a 5-day fishing trip hosted by Where Wise Men Fish (www.wherewisemenfish.com) and made available for evaluation to the Online Extra subscribers of The Angling Report.

The one thing that is certain about a week on the Atlantic Salmon Reserve in August is the total unpredictability of what to expect. What is certain is that on any normal season at some stage in August or September the summer highs will give way to cold fronts that will bring much needed rain to the rivers and steady the river temperatures from what can be approaching 20 C to something more regular in the region of 6-12 C.

I had been warned that the Tarpon fishing off the coast of Costa Rica, where the mighty Rio Colorado enters the sea, was something to behold. I had also been warned by a confidant that he would never go back...not because of a lack of fish but rather, conversely, because it was simply too much. Over 3 days they had hooked around 30 monstrously huge Tarpon.

"Dorado are either the Argentineans best kept secret or else travelling anglers, hell bent on pursuing the admittedly excellent Sea Trout fishing, simply miss out on the opportunity." In fairness neither of those statements are quite true. Argentineans absolutely love their Dorado fishing and happily boast about it. On the other side, "Western" anglers do come and fish for Dorado although they are usually given second priority. From my perspective I have definitely fallen into the latter category. In 2009 I resolved to make amends with a visit to Pira Lodge in the Argentine district of Corrientes. What a revelation it was!

It was the most expensive day trip I've ever taken: Tweed Angling Fair, May 2007. Jaw-droppingly effortless casting exhibitions then a wander through the trade stands. Drawn as if by magnet to the WhereWiseMenFish fish stand. Hooked! Sea trout fishing on Patagonia's Rio Gallegos. I'd seen Paul Young's 'Hooked on Fishing' programme and always thought I'd love to go there. Can we afford it? Carpe diem. Tempus fugit. Anno domini. More prosaically, Richard Branson's Screw it, let's do it! Sarah said yes. Decided Week 11, early March 2008.

It started off with the most inauspicious beginning imaginable and ended up being one of the greatest fishing finds in recent times. It was the angling equivalent of finding a Picasso in a car boot sale. This is a place where wild Rainbow Trout grow to gargantuan proportions; a place where Trout were introduced less than a decade ago but are now present in the numbers and size that would make our own put and take fishery managers weep with envy.

Taking a non-fisher on a fishing trip may seem to be a fairly unwise move. Taking your girlfriend/wife or partner on a fishing trip may well be considered the equivalent of relationship Kamikaze. It is a problem that has vexed many a fisherman as he tries to find a way to combine the annual holiday with a fishing trip, whilst trying to avoid immediate separation at even the suggestion of the idea, let alone the trip itself.

Each lodge, destination and species of fish has its own characteristics and more typically one often arrives with a set of preconceptions of what to expect. The Royal Coachman, in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska, is a fly out lodge which offers a slice of everything. Having pursued a career in the army I suppose I knew what to expect or rather what not to expect when being given orders to proceed to some far flung destination on the other side of the world. From someone who was organising a trip this might sound a little odd. I should after all have been overflowing with information. Of course to a certain extent this was true. I had been given the all clear by several very reputable sources. I had seen the pictures; I had read/written the pre-trip instructions so technically I was fully informed. I would imagine Montgomery probably thought the same when he embarked on Operation Market Garden, (A Bridge Too Far), in World War II.

A fishing trip to Southern Chile is much more than just another bit of piscatorial madness that will see you pack your bags and travel half the way around the world just to feel the convulsive shake of a trout's head and feel the bend in your rod. Of that you will have plenty and rightly said there are many places closer to home where you can experience that. What makes Chile a quite extraordinary destination to visit is the unbelievable scale of the wilderness surrounding you and the emerald clear waters that trace there course from the Andes to the ocean.

Although only in my mid 30s I have been an avid fisherman since childhood. During that time I have spent much time listening to older generations reminiscing about days gone by when our home rivers teemed with vast quantities of fish. Prior to a recent trip to Cuba one of my close friends mentioned in passing that despite a fishing experience par excellence he had been somewhat taken aback by the brusque manner of his fishing guide. Saltwater fly fishing whether it be for Bass off the coast of Donnegal or Marlin in the Indian Ocean is as vastly different from freshwater fishing as cane rods are from the modern high tech Carbon Graphite rods of today. The surge and power of salt-water species can give the unaccustomed a hedonistic taste for the sport in a way that the humble stocked Rainbow Trout can only dream of. The biggest challenge of all however is usually making that first leap which takes one from familiar turf to exotic tropical waters.

An Icelandic businessman, fighting to save the Atlantic salmon from extinction, has been awarded the world's largest environmental prize for grassroots activists.
Orri Vigfússon, (64), from Reykjavik, Iceland, is one of six recipients of the international Goldman Environmental Prize awarded for his 17-year campaign to protect North Atlantic wild salmon. Since Vigfússon founded the North Atlantic Salmon Fund1, commercial open-sea fishing in the Atlantic has fallen by over 75 per cent, and more than five million North Atlantic salmon have been saved. To build on this success, Vigfússon is now calling on Scotland and Norway to end commercial net fishing for Atlantic salmon.

Spey casting uses two-handed, longer rods and a roll cast technique to load the line with water to make the fly carry further, with accomplished casters reaching 200 feet or more.
