Scott Fly Fishing School

Fly Fishing School for Children

About the Fly Fishing School

The Scott Fly Fishing School provides fly fishing tuition in Devon and Cornwall for all levels of abilities. If it is your first time with a fly rod or you just want to dust down a few cobwebs and add a few more casts to your armoury we are able to help. Perhaps you have longed to cast your fly line out to the horizon searching for bass on a fly rod? We'll show you how! We have access to private lakes for you to learn in a fun and relaxed manner without having to worry who is watching!

When it comes to guiding we are ideally placed so should you want to catch trout from the tiniest moorland stream to sea trout and salmon from larger rivers we can show you our favourite spots.

We try to be a little bit different so if you want to be too, how about fly fishing for trout from a kayak? Or pike on a fly or even carp? The list is endless but we have the instructors and guides to make it that bit easier for you.

Location

Located in Broadwoodwidger, Devon, just two minutes from the A30 and on the edge of Dartmoor in England, the Scott Fly Fishing School is perfectly positioned for river, lake and sea fishing. Just a double haul away from 730 acre Roadford Lake and its beautiful brown trout. If you are heading to Cornwall we can take you to 274 acre Stithians Lake, and many saltwater locations.

Groups and Student Teacher Ratio’s

With our guiding on rivers we operate a one guide per two anglers and on lakes a maximum of three anglers per instructor. As we have 4 full time guides we can easily accommodate groups of friends, fishing clubs or corporate events.

Courses Available

The school runs a number of courses based around everything required to get a absolute beginner started too ‘top’ up courses to help people prepare themselves for an overseas fishing trip. A selection of what is on offer is shown below.

  1. Trout Rookie-Still Water. Perfect for the newcomer to fly fishing, we’ll teach you about the tackle and then it’s off to the water to learn how to cast. We teach you in a simple, easy to understand manner building up the casts until it’s time to pit your wits against the fish!
  2. Trout Rookie River. Let us help you make the step from still water to river in what is one of our favourite courses. There is nothing like seeing a wild brown trout rising to your dry fly! We’ll show you the casts and the different approach needed for moving water and then we take you off to one of our beats to put it into practice.
  3. Trout Bum River. Named after one of our guides but we mean it endearingly! A days guided fishing for wild trout where our guides will pass on hints, tips and techniques that have been honed after many years on our rivers that will help you up the catch rate and make your day on the river all that more memorable!
  4. Spey to Z. Spey casting with both single and double handed rods. Are you off to Scotland or farther afield? Make sure you go equipped with the casts you’ll need for every fishing situation.
  5. Double Haul, Distance and Beyond! Are you a reservoir angler, going on a bonefish trip or looking to make the next step on the casting ladder? Join us for 1/2 day of upping your line speed and reaching the horizon!
  6. Pike on the Fly. Looking for some fly fishing fun in the off season? Throw some large flies at toothy critters and be ready for the response! We have one of the finest pike experts in the country who will show you everything you will need to know.
  7. Bass Fisherman. Join our guides at one of our special marks throughout Devon and Cornwall looking for one of our favourite fish. This is suited to the more experienced angler but we are able to help with a casting "tune up" before hand.
  8. Kayak Fisher. New, but quickly becoming one of our most popular courses. Jump aboard one of our fishing kayaks or canoe and we’ll take you out for a day to remember!

Past Student Comments

"It started 15months ago with some lessons as a present. Thanks to Pete it is now an obsession!
He was professional and patient (undoing my knots) in early casting lessons on a stocked rainbow lake. Later teaching me rivercraft and the joys of small wild brownies. Then sharing his favourite, magical locations- helping me observe and enjoy them as well as the fishing. He’s passionate about his own fishing and joyous about his pupil’s success- a good cast or big fish. (As I compare my performance with others on the lakes, I now recognize the huge benefit of being well taught rather than shown by a friend and) even now a day out with Pete is a great pleasure as well as an education."

"Pete, thanks for a new and unexpected joy in life."

"As most of us had hardly touched a rod before Mark was a great laugh and explained everything really simply. He made us aware that just fly casting is an art in itself. The Scott Fly Fishing School is definitely recommended for a good experience and introduction to the world of fly fishing."
