The River & Environment
Waking up in the morning to a backdrop of snow capped mountains, with the Surna River winding its way through the valley in front of the lodge, sets the picture for this delightful stretch of salmon water. The Surna is one of the county’s three longest rivers with the most stable fishing to be found in the 20 kilometres or so between the Harrang power station and the village of Skei. The Nygard estate runs in the midst of this stretch with the Advocate pool being recognized as one of the best holding spots on the river. The biggest rod caught salmon ever recorded on the Surma was 26.5 Kilos, and each year a number of 17 or 18 Kilo salmon are caught from the various beats.
The FishingThe fishing at the Nygard estate is focused around the period from mid June to mid July. Although most of the big salmon run the river from as early as late May it is in June when the fishing stabilizes. The water runs colder than the seasonal climate would suggest as a result of water entering the river from the Harrang power station a distance upstream. Although sinking lines are appropriate in June and intermediate lines in July it is this cold water entering the sytsem that provides the stability along this section of the river. The beat is fished by 4 - 6 anglers sharing five main pools. Rods are rotated over the stretch with two anglers at a time normally being allocated a pool to fish together. Typically there will be two guides for a group of six fishermen.
AccommodationThe Fisherman’s Lodge at Nygard Farm has been converted from an old barn into one of Norway’s best fishing lodges. Sleeping up to 8 people in single rooms, it has been designed from the outset with anglers’ needs in mind. A central open plan fire, outdoor hot tub and cosy rooms make this a perfect compliment to the cold waters of the Surna. To compliment this top class lodge you will be looked after by Anita who prepares and serves excellent food, using the best of local produce. Specialties include venison/moose, lamb, fillet of beef, a wide variety of fish and possibly the most tender smoked salmon you have ever tasted. Local cheese or seasonal strawberries, for which the area is famous, provide the finishing touch. With its scenic setting and views of the Trollheimen Mountains in the distance, Nygard will leave you feeling close to nature – and a long way from the workaday. Recommended Salmon Flies For NorwayMove cursor over Norwegian Salmon Fly to view in 360 Norwegian Salmon Flies are a mixture of both traditional salmon fly patterns, of the style you would fish with in any salmon river in the UK, alongside some fly patterns that have been developed specifically for Norwegian Rivers – but of course can also be used universally. During the month of June big-bodied Temple Dog Style Flies are by far and away the most popular with wing lengths of 10-15 cm. As the rivers drop away in late June and July Norwegian Salmon Rivers typically run with a clear blue/green tinge. In these clear conditions and with the bright sun flies need to be sized and dressed accordingly. Micro Conehead Tubes in conjunction with strong hooks (Loop Doubles recommended) as well as traditional flies tied on very Strong Hooks such as Partridge Doubles. Anyone booking a trip with WhereWiseMenFish will receive a free box of Salmon Flies for the trip as well as receiving a 20% discount off any additional flies. Activities for non-anglers

Its big in form, big in fish and big in information along with some fantastic photography. It certainly is not a bedside reading book due to its size. Its a must for anyone who gets turned on by large salmon.(Is there a salmon fisherman that isn't!!
