The River & Environment
The Stjørdal River, with its tributaries Forra and Sona, is regarded as among the top fly-fishing rivers in Norway. It offers a total of 85 kilometers of high quality fishing and bears many similarities with the River Tweed in Scotland. The Stjørdal River, like most rivers in the Central Norway region, is well known for its big salmon and every year a good number of 15-20 kilo salmon are caught. Early June is probably the best time for the attempting to hook and land a 40-pounder on the lower parts of the river – coming in fresh from the fjord. There are normally good runs of medium size salmon and grilse during July and well into August. Over the last decade, good river management has provided a very good return of salmon and the river consistently features among the 10 - 12 best rivers in Norway.
News - Improvements for 2008The Stjørdal is a part of the huge Trondheim-fjord basin and is one of 20 or so rivers that will benefit hugely from the bag-net fishing buy-out in the Trondheim fjord and nearby coastal areas. Indications from the 2005 season show higher average weight, and a marked turnaround of river-caught salmon compared with net-caught on a ratio of 2:1 in 2005 compared with 1:2 in 2004. The Fishing - Hembre Gård Beat
Hembre Gård consists of 2 kilometers of double bank fishing and is one of the best beats on the river. Six to eight guests are accommodated at Hembre itself. In addition a rota system is in place for fishing the different beats. This enables anglers to try out different stretches of the river and offers the benefit of some 3 kilometers of good fly-fishing, close at hand. The total annual catches of these beats is in the region of 200 salmon and the average weight is around 4,5 kilos. The Hembre beat, 25 kilometers above the river mouth, has some excellent long stretches combined with good holding pools. In particular, the Home pool below the Hegra Bridge, includes a number of very good fly-fishing stretches. During the latter part of the season there are good opportunities for sea trout as well. In addition to salmon and sea trout fishing in the river, there are opportunities to fish for brown trout in local lakes. Groups of 6-8 anglers are normally looked after by two guides although extra guides can be made avilable on request. Accommodation
The Hembre fishing lodge has 8 self-contained studio flats with plenty of space for one or two people (when sharing), toilet, shower and electric heating. Each flat has a fully equipped kitchenette. There is a laundry room, drying facilities and a freezer for those who may wish to take a fish home. The farmhouses are just 300 meters outside Hegra Village with its bank, grocery store and other services. All meals are prepared, arranged and served in the “Stabbur” pub. Originally the old farm-storehouse, it has been converted into a small farm museum, decorated with many antiques, tools and gadgets from the early farming and fishing days. With its unique ambience, it’s the perfect place for any fishing party to relax and enjoy each other’s company after a fishing day. During the fishing months the “Stabbur” has a “Pub Night" every Wednesday evening where the guests at Hembre can meet some of the locals to exchange fishing lore over a drink or two, and to enjoy some very special home made snacks. Getting ThereThe accommodation at Hembre Gård is just beside the river and is 15 mins drive from Trondheim airport making it probably the most easily accessible beat of all the Norwegian rivers. (Although there is a road bridge crossing high above the river the rest of the beat is unspoilt countryside). The lodge can arrange for people to be collected from either the airport or train station as required. For those who would like a little more flexibility in their movements a rental car can easily be arranged from the airport. Best Times to GoThe season is the same for all the Norwegian rivers running from June 1st-August 31st. The opportunities for catching the biggest freshest fish are early on in the season with the main grilse run arriving in July. Opportunities for Non-FishersNorway is nothing but an incredibly picturesque and scenic country. There are good opportunities for non-fishing partners or friends and with the use of a rental car much of the beauty and features of this region of Norway can be unleashed. Areas of interest to name but a few include hiking in the surrounding picturesque farmland, touring around the Trondheim fjord, visiting Hegra fortress or viewing exhibitions and events in Stjørdal town centre or the city of Trondheim.
