The River & Environment

The Orkla River is one of Norway’s best salmon rivers and the stretch at Aunan provides some of the most enchanting fly-fishing water available. If the river is seductive then the same can be said for the surroundings in equal measure. Nestled into a tranquil but steeply sloped valley, surrounded by mature woodland and well kept farms and secluded from major roads or railways, this is as much a retreat as it is a great salmon river.

The Fishing

Compromising of twelve named pools, each one with different attributes and character the fishing is as varied as it is seductive. Most of the beats are double bank and the ones which are not are rotated at midday thereby ensuring the level of exclusivity that you would expect on such an appealing stretch of water. For the avid fly-fisherman who wants to experience beautiful surroundings, comfortable lodging, the opportunity to come across some very large fish, (20.3 kilo/45 lb salmon caught in 2004), and convenient access from the UK and Europe you need look no further.

Guest Comments

"The food in the charming old potato store is tremendously good. We dined on roast saddle of reindeer, local lamb, pork and the best salmon I have ever tasted. The local strawberries, for which the area apparently is famous, were memorable. And on top of all this were the wonderful local cheeses. While food may be a minor consideration for many fishers, it is nice to have a good meal to look forward to after a hard day on the river."

The accommodation at Aunan consists of a number of extremely comfortable cabins ranging from twin bedroom lodges to a mini chalet with 4 bedrooms, en suite bathrooms, Jacuzzi and riverside terrace making it ideal for families or larger groups. Although each of the lodges has its own kitchenette that is about as close as you need be to any form of food preparation as a dedicated chef ensures that your appetite will always be sated. Most of the meals are taken in the main lodge however equally the options are always open for bankside lunches and barbecues.

Best Times to Go

Norway: Orkla River

The season on the Orkla runs from 1 June- 31 August. The opening weeks of the season are fairly classic spring salmon fishing with the biggest fish entering the system although in fewer numbers. The beginning of July sees the numbers increase as the grilse run gets into full swing. The season continues until the end of August with techniques changing as the season progresses from fast sinking lines during the early weeks to floating lines and smaller flies as the season progresses.

Getting There

Aunan is located in the district of Rennebu which is in easy reach of Trondheim airport or Berkåk railway station. There are regular flights from Stanstead Airport and the most convenient flights can be booked on www.norwegian.no. The lodge can arrange for people to be collected from either the airport or train station as required.

Background reading for your trip:

"The Domesday Book of Giant Salmon" by Fred Buller (Hardcover)

Our Comments:

"Obviously some very extensive research has been carried out to produce this excellent book. Its big in form, big in fish and big in information along with some fantastic photography. It certainly is not a bedside reading book due to its size. Its a must for anyone who gets turned on by large salmon.(Is there a salmon fisherman that isn't!! "--Review by SEJ Grace

"A Celebration of Salmon Rivers: The World's Finest Atlantic Salmon Rivers (Hardcover)" by Norty Atlantic Salmon Fund

Our Comments:

A Celebration of Salmon Rivers was written and produced with the express purpose of helping raise funds for the North Atlantic Salmon Federation (NASF). The book is about the famous Atlantic Salmon and the even more famous rivers they inhabit. It does not pretend to be a Salmon fishermans bible however it has some wonderful pictures of many of the best known Atlantic Salmon rivers with accompanying articles, many by famous names who are associated or connected with the various rivers covered in the book.
