The fishery manager of the River Bann, Gordon Sim, gave the following tips: Tip 1: "Try not to wade deeply, if at all, when fly fishing as fish hold very close into the river bank." Tip 2: "Be very carefull on the mud flats when estuary fishing and ensure you are aware of the tides - better still - use one of our excellent/experienced guides." Tip 3: "In low water conditions don't be afraid to fish very small flies for salmon." Tip 4: "Remember the lower River Bann beats also have some excellent wild brown trout fishing as well as salmon." The AreaThe North Coast of Ireland is an area of outstanding natural beauty with breaktaking coastal scenery. There are fantastic sandy beaches at Portrush, Castlerock, Benone and Whitepark Bay all within easy reach. Visit the world famous Giants Causeway where the mythical giant Finn MacCool fashioned his intricate hexagonal columns from basalt. Dunluce Castle, Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, and of course the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world at Bushmills are all a must to visit. The area is also very well known for its golf courses from Royal Portrush to many smaller but demanding links type courses. Other activities include horse riding, the excellent shopping in Coleraine and Derry City and not to be forgotten, the many friendly and high quality pubs and restaurants.
The FishingThe outstandingly beautiful Causeway Coast can offer the angler some excellent Ireland fishing for a variety of fish species at very different venues. Highly prized Atlantic salmon can be caught from the prime beats of the lower River Bann as well as from some smaller rivers like the Roe, the Agivey and the River Bush where the famous Irish whiskey is made. There is also extremely good wild brown trout fishing on these rivers especially the Bann and the Agivey. There are four major tributaries, all of which are ideal game fish habitat; the Clady River, Agivey River, Macosquin River, and Ballymoney River, all but the latter joining from the west, having risen in the Sperrin mountains. The lower River Bann is very important in an Ireland fishing context as a salmonid river, with historic catch statistics of over 20,000 salmon per annum taken by nets and traps until the mid-20th century. It still remains important as an angling river with between 1,500 to 2,000 salmon caught on the rod each year. There are four main lower River Bann beats which give the angler an excellent chance of catching salmon and trout. These are:
To add an extra dimension there is also superb fishing to be had on the estuary systems and in the sea for hard fighting sea trout, bass and mullet – the bonefish of the north. We are fortunate to have qualified and insured guides that have put in hundreds of angling hours to know the best marks where these fish can be caught on the fly at all the various stages of the tide. We can also provide fantastic rainbow trout fishing at two locations, Moorebrook Lodge and Stone Falls Specimen Trout Fishery. Moorbrook Lodge Trout Fishery is owned and managed by William and Stephanie Holmes since 1998. Both are highly experienced in game fishery with William being a qualified instructor. Moorbrook is set in 20 acres of unspoilt countryside with panoramic views along the famous Causeway Coast and over to Scotland. Moorbrook prides itself on being a very friendly fishery and always has a member of staff on hand with hints and tips on what fly/tactics are being effective, newcomers will always feel comfortable and welcome. Stone Falls Specimen Trout Fishery and School of Fly-fishing is the first Specimen Trout Fishery in Ireland and the only one providing wheelbarrows to transport the catch! Rod numbers are limited to five rods per day giving the angler peace, space and tranquillity to stalk the fish of a lifetime.
