The Fishing
The River Moy is one of Ireland’s most famous salmon rivers for a very good reason – its run of fish is outstanding and Mount Falcon has been inextricably linked with the River Moy and salmon fishing throughout its history. Approximately 85% of the salmon (estimated at between 50,000 and 60,000) that run the entire River Moy system have to pass through the Mount Falcon Fishery. This fact combined with the fishery’s relative proximity to the tidal stretches of the river ensure there is a constant flow of fresh fish throughout the season. The two mile double bank Mount Falcon Fishery is one of the main fisheries on the lower river and is situated in a pleasant countryside environment. While it has the capability of producing excellent salmon fly fishing at times the Mount Falcon Fishery is very much an all methods fishery offering the angler a variety of experiences over its beats. The upper beats can be fly-fished from the river bank or from a boat using single or double handed rods, with mini tube flies, small Irish shrimp flies, or hairwing flies being the most successful. There is also plenty of good water where bait fishing or spinning can be practiced and on most of the lower fishery prawn and shrimp fishing is permitted. The exclusivity of the water here allows anglers the scope and freedom from having to compete with other anglers. The Wall Pool is considered by many to be showpiece of the Mount Falcon Fishery and is one of the most productive beats on the entire river. The pool derives its name from a volcanic dyke of bed rock that extends across the pool and as the water levels drop this dyke creates a rock wall below which the salmon hold up. The river here is shallow with a gravel bottom and fast flowing water making this an ideal fly fishing beat. The Lodge
