About the Fly Fishing School
This school is located at the Vermillion Ranch in Sweetgrass County, Montana in some of Montana's finest fly-fishing country. The ranch sits on the banks of the Yellowstone River in its "Blue Ribbon" trout fishing section and is a short drive from the Boulder River, the Stillwater River, and numerous alpine lakes. The Vermillion Ranch also has several ponds inhabited by eager trout, bass, and sunfish. During the week, you will fish many of these famed waters with our instructors. All instructors have been teaching people to fly-fish for many years. Each instructor specializes in breaking down fly-fishing into simple segments which will help you improve your fishing skills. Each instructor has taught many people of all ages to fish and has been selected for his patience and his ability to make the fishing experience fun and educational. Above all, however, each instructor will make sure that all of our students are safe during their time at school. While at the school, students will stay at the Harrison Homestead - the oldest home in Sweetgrass County. The recently renovated Homestead has been placed on the National Historic Register and has an abundance of room for the students. When not fishing, students may spend their time hiking on the ranch, fishing, swimming in the Vermillion Ranch ponds, watching the variety of wildlife which inhabits the Vermillion Ranch, and enjoying their fellow students. In the case of the kid's schools, children attending will be accompanied by an instructor at all times. This year's students each enjoyed their time at our Fly-Fishing School for Kids. Students made friends with children from around the country, learned about insects and their role in a trout stream, and learned to fly-fish. Students all caught trout in excess of 20 inches in length. It was a wonderful week, and we cannot wait to do it again in 2007. School ItineraryStudents will arrive to camp on Saturday evening in time to get settled in and enjoy a welcome dinner. Each morning will begin with a hearty breakfast, followed by an hour or two of classroom instruction. The schedule of classes is as follows:
After class, we will spend the rest of the day fishing on the rivers, ponds, and lakes around the ranch. Students will fish a different water each day and there is time allocated to insure that students spend an appropriate amount of time swimming, playing, or just relaxing. After the day of fishing, students will return to the lodge for dinner and can spend the rest of the day fly-tying or practicing the techniques we have learned during the day. On some days, we will be visited by professor emeritus of our travel partner Sweetwater Travel - Dale Vermillion. Dale Vermillion will lecture on Lewis and Clark's travels through Montana, Custer's Last Stand in southeastern Montana, and Montana's rugged mountain men, Jim Bridger and John Coulter. Most of his stories will be true. In the middle of the week, students will camp along the river, learning camping skills and simply enjoying sitting by a campfire with marsh mellows, stories, and falling stars. Students will also spend plenty of time just being kids, playing whiffle ball, swimming, playing Frisbee, or, sitting in our deer blinds watching deer move through the forest. All activities will be supervised by the instructors. Availability and Pricing for the 2007 SeasonIf you would like to know more about the Kid's Fly Fishing School, please contact us.
