Ambergris Caye itself is 25 miles long and a little over a mile wide in some places. It is however the 190 mile long Barrier Reef, the second largest living coral reef in the world, that makes this area special. Running around a 1/4 mile from the shore, it provides superb sheltered conditions for salt-water fly-fishing.
The AccommodationAt 40 years old, El Pescador is the oldest and most well established fishing lodge in Belize. Over the years it has built upon its charm and reputation and established itself as far more than just a dedicated fishing lodge. Family run, it is a place where both anglers and non-anglers with children can relax and enjoy more than just the fishing. The main lodge is an intimate, 14 room hotel set in a colonial style mahogany building with a long veranda overlooking the beach and the Barrier Reef. In addition there are two collections of one, two and three–bedroom villas, each surrounding a private pool.
All the rooms have en-suite bathrooms, powerful showers and air conditioning. There is main freshwater swimming pool running in front of the lodge. The lodge features a well stocked bar, central dining room, and a small shop for the various essentials. The FishingThe fishing at Ambergris Caye is both abundant and diverse. It has a combination of ocean-side flats which run between the shoreline and the reef as well as a series of inland creeks, mangrove lagoons and channels. Anglers either fish as pairs with a shared guide or as individuals. The guides are English speaking and have traditional 23 ft pangas. The boats are very stable and designed to cut through the waves giving a smooth ride. They are equipped with a long casting platform, guides poling platform and with deckchairs and cushions in the body of the boat, they provide for a very comfortable and relaxing fishing platform. Tarpon
The El Pescador fishery has resident Tarpon from juveniles to fish of 100lbs that are present all year round. With the arrival of the migratory Tarpon in July, August and September, this is when the fishing is at it’s best. Tarpon, in 3-5 ft of water, who have the ability to jump 4ft in the air with ease makes for fishing which can be truly explosive. BonefishThe Bones at El Pescador are mainly in the 2-5lb category and good fishing can be had just minutes from the lodge. Most of the fishing is done from the casting platform of the boat although there are also wadeable flats. PermitAlthough not in huge numbers, there are large schools which can range from 4-30lbs with the average fish being around 8-10lbs. They can be found both on the Bonefish and Tarpon flats and although never easy they do provide for a realistic chance of a grand slam. Non-Guided FishingFor the adventurous there is the opportunity for non-guided fishing from kayaks and canoes, which provide extensive access to a large system of lagoons behind the lodge. These lagoons, which are rarely fishing provide some exciting and challenging sport outside of the scheduled fishing days. Alternate Activities
El Pescador is established to cater to the non-angler as well as the angler. At the lodge there is the option of simply enjoying the atmosphere and the sun beside the pool or undertaking any one of a number of activities. Diving in Belize is spectacular and the lodge has its own dive master. Alternatively one can go snorkelling, explore the area by bicycle, take out a sea kayak or book a massage. Inland excursions can be arranged to the Mayan ruins or to explore the rainforest and its wildlife and if nothing else fits you can simply take the boat taxi to San Pedro, the local town, enjoy a change of scenery, some added nightlife or do a bit of shopping. Getting to the LodgeOn arriving at Belize international airport there are frequent flights to San Pedro which is a short 15 min journey. From there you will be collected and taken by boat to the lodge which typically takes another 10-20 mins. Best Times to GoEl Pescador is open all year round. The Tarpon fishing is at its best from July-Sept and the most settled conditions in Belize are typically found from April through to September. Availability and Pricing

Background reading for your trip:"Tarpon on Fly"(Paperback) by Donald Larmouth, Rob FordyceOur Comments:"As a collector of tarpon books I know that this is the best tarpon book ever written." -- M Larkin As Flip Pallot says in the books' introduction, "...there is nothing that you need to know about tarpon and pursuing them with flies that is not contained in this book...". The information that Larmouth and Fordyce share within this book is simple, concise and as complete as it gets. Add to that Larmouth's wonderful narratives that precede each chapter, and you feel like you are on the casting platform of the guide's skiff! I found the book both entertaining and instructional and the photography is superb. A must read for anyone who is serious about fishing for tarpon on fly!-- Steve Krystyniak US customers: Buy at Amazon.com UK customers: Buy at Amazon UK "Bonefishing!"(Hardcover) by Randall KaufmannOur Comments:"Good grief, how good does a book on bonefishing have to be? Those who reviewed this book, either did not read it or do not recognise quality when they see it. No book in the realm of fishing equals this one for accuracy of information, interesting anecdotes, breadth of coverage, and spectacular photography. I have fished one half dozen times for bones in Florida, Mexico and Belize and can eagerly confirm everything included in Kaufmann's book. I am no expert, but I can tell you it's the best book on the subject written. It does contain fly patterns, but I did not expect tying instructions for the flies and the leaders. Those subjects are well covered in much more mundane books and video tapes.
