The Fishing Area - Jardines De La Reina

Named the Queen's Gardens by Christopher Columbus, the Jardines de la Reina ("JDR") is a pristine chain of islands that extends on a general north-west to south-east direction, paralleling the Cuban coast for 150 km. The entire area has been designated a Cuban National Park and as such it has been protected from commercial fishing for decades. Formed by over 600 cays and islands there are few better areas or locations more suited to anglers and specifically fly-anglers.

The Fishing

The fishable area of the JDR is huge and packed with variety. Although to the untrained eye much may look similar as you whizz along in a skiff, to the Cuban guides who know the area intimately each flat, island, channel or mangrove lagoon holds its own array of opportunities and surprises. Bonefish are numerous, good-sized Permit inhabit the area in numbers and amongst the channels there are any number of juvenile Tarpon holes, snappers, barracudas and sharks. Over the peak months from April to June the attention really focuses in earnest on the outstanding migratory Tarpon fishing. Fish in the 80lb range cruise the flats in good numbers providing some of the best sighted Tarpon fishing you are likely to encounter.

Skiffs & Guides

Each pair of anglers has an individual skiff and guide. The professional fly-fishing skiffs typically have 60-70HP engines. Although wade fishing is possible in some areas the majority of the fishing is done from the skiff with the guide using the platform and pole to spot and steer you into the optimum casting position. All the boats have coolers for drinks although there is also the option of returning to the yacht for a break, a short siesta or even a scuba dive should you wish to do so.
