EXCLUSIVE WHEREWISEMENFISH WEEKS ON PEROLA YACHT – ISLA DE LA JUVENTUD
7-14 APRIL 2017
14-21 APRIL 2017
WhereWiseMenFish has exclusively booked the Perola Yacht for two consecutive weeks in April 2017 to Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth). The Isle of Youth has a well-established reputation for providing some of the best migratory Tarpon fishing in Cuba with opportunities of fish over 100lbs but equally good numbers of more ‘manageable’ Tarpon from 30-60lbs. The Perola is the most charming yacht of all the live-aboard options in Cuba, oozing elegance, authenticity and sophistication. The Captain of the Perola, Manuel, of Spanish/Italian descent speaks perfect English and is a fantastic source of information about not just the fishing but Cuba and the whole environment. With over a decade running the Perola he and his very experienced crew do an amazing job ensuring everything functions exactly how it should whilst maintaing the Cuban feel, complete with daily mohitos made with fresh mint.

The Perola is a 75-foot luxury live-aboard yacht that for 2017 is operating exclusively in the Isle of Youth area. This area is also fished in rotation with anglers staying at Hotel Rancho on the mainland however as with all the yachts it offers a number of distinct advantages:
- Extended fishing hours (Guides will be stood by the skiffs ready to go from 8am -1 pm and 4pm-8pm/dark)
- Immediate access to the fishing area (no taxi journey or skiff travel time of 45-60mins to the fishing)
- Fantastic food. Freshly caught fish everyday with lots of lobster
- Very experienced english speaking Captain of the Perola and long-standing crew
- Will move to numerous selected anchorages over the week providing great access to some of the more remote and best fishing areas with minimal travel time
- Late evening fishing opportunities when the Tarpon fishing can be at its best
- Option to return to the yacht for lunch at midday with a freshly cooked lunch and a siesta out of the midday heat
- Opportunity to spend some time on the Isle of Youth and see part of Cuba that rarely gets seen by tourists.
Over the weeks fishing anglers will have the chance to fish the full length of the fishable area, from the Islas de Mangles in the North West to Cayo Roserio in the South East, stopping at selected anchorages such as Cayo Campo and the Cantiles Islands. This is a wider area than the area that can be fished by anglers at Hotel Rancho on account of the proximity of the yacht to the fishing.

Accommodation - Perola - Live Aboard Yacht
This is a wonderful yacht, recently refurbished and perfect for a group of six anglers. There are four very comfortable air-conditioned cabins below deck, most having their own private bathroom, with good showers, plenty of hot water, and lots of storage space for anglers. Dining is on the upper deck which can be left open-sided to enjoy the elements but also closed if required. Freshly caught fish and lobsters are the mainstay of lunch and evening meals but you can expect a varied menu with some boat specialities such as equisite cerviche. The anchorages the Perola occupies are well positioned and the boat is extremely well balanced with almost no motion.

The Fishing Area – Isla de la Juvetud
The Isle of Youth is a world away from the crowded white sand beaches of Varadero and other more tourist focused areas in Cuba. It is only a short 25-minute flight directly south from Havana and it is the largest of the 350 islets in the Archipelago de los Canarreos. The area is comparable in size to the Florida Keys This string of islands, which includes Cayo Largo a little further to the east, are the reason for the fabulous saltwater flats fishing in this area. A myriad of mangrove islets, sandy flats and turtle grass expanses comprise the bulk of the fishing area. The southern edge is ocean fronted which draws in large Tarpon all year round.
The Saltwater Fly-Fishing
Alongside the Bonefish, which are numerous and of a good size on many of the ocean flats, it is the Tarpon that are one of the primary sources of interest for anglers visiting this area. The numbers of migratory Tarpon peak from April to June but good fishing can be had throughout the year. There are any number of inner mangrove lagoons and channels with a surprising depth of water that can draw in some of the largest Tarpon to be found in Cuba. Tarpon of 80-100lbs are not uncommon. In addition some wide ocean channels provide excellent passages for Tarpon heading in or out from the sea and these in turn open into large expanses of flats providing excellent opportunities to cast at sighted Tarpon. There are of course opportunities for Permit at the Isle of Youth alongside Barracuda, Jacks, Cubero Snapper and other saltwater species.
From big Tarpon to Snapper – Plenty of opportunities for mixed species on the flats, mangroves and the ocean reef
Skiffs & Guides
Each pair of anglers has an individual skiff and guide. The professional fly-fishing skiffs typically have 60-70HP engines. Although wade fishing is possible in some areas the majority of the fishing is done from the skiff with the guide using the platform and pole to spot and steer you into the optimum casting position. All the boats have coolers for drinks although there is also the option of returning to the yacht for a mid-day break.
