Wise Men Fishing Tips

Lodge owner, Bob Efford, points out that:

Tip 1: "If only bringing one fly rod select a 5 to 6 weight rod. If you are brining 2 bring a 3 to 5 weight and an 8 weight."

Tip 2: "Be sure to bring streamers too, on windy days they are great for trolling for northern pike and brookies."

Tip 3: "Remember to travel light, as airline regulations should not exceed 50 pounds."

The Area

Welcome to one of the finest fishing lodges in Labrador, Canada. Fishing in Canada offers a safe destination with unspoiled wilderness and trout fishing you can only dream about.

The Eagle River Trout Lodge is located in Labrador, Canada at Eagle River and is a remote fly-in fishing site. There are also outlying overnight fishing camps located on this river system where you can explore and spend a night or two under canvas.

The fly fishing trips include accommodations, all prepared meals featuring home-style cooking, a fishing guide shared between two anglers, charter flight to the fishing lodges and return, plus all amenities for your comfort and safety.

Labrador, located in the northeast corner of Canada, is a wilderness fly fisherrsquo;s dream come true. Hundreds of miles of undisturbed lakes and rivers exist here, and extremely limited access translates into some of the most pristine surroundings to be found anywhere in the world.

The remote headwaters of world-renowned Eagle River, lying about 60 air miles to the south of Goose Bay, contain some of the finest fishing for brook trout and Northern pike to be found in Canada.

The Fishing

Canada Fly Fishing: The Eagle River Trout Lodge

The brook trout fishing is some of the best to be found in Labrador, both in quantity and quality of fish which average three to six pounds, some even larger.

The Eagle Lake Sportfishing Lodge is strategically located at a narrow section of the lake, moving water directly in front of the fishing lodge yields huge Eastern brook trout and Northern pike. Angling further afield at inlets and outlets is provided by the sportfishing guides who will transport you in stable Gander River boats, where you may fish from the boats or wade the numerous pools.

Eagle Lake forms a considerable portion of the headwaters of the Eagle River. While all of the water in this watershed is of a freestone type, limestone-like slicks are numerous, and they are a joy to the dry-fly fisherman. Within a short distance of the fishing lodge, anglers can fish virtually any type of water they prefer. Brook Trout feed on stone flies, mayflies and caddis which abound and make-up the troutrsquo;s main diet.

For the adventuresome angler there are still virgin waters to explore in our sportfishing areas. The same is true at our sister site, Awesome Lake Lodge, where the only species is Eastern brook trout which abound in more than 30 miles of river.

The Lodge

Canada fly fishing: The Eagle River Trout Lodge

Originally built in 1968, Eagle River Fishing Lodge has been rebuilt on the site of the old fishing camp and upgraded to contain all modern amenities. Anglers will enjoy the remoteness of a Canadian fishing trip while enjoying the warmth of a comfortable facility "in the middle of nowhere".

Accessible only by floatplane, Eagle River fishing lodge has been hosting generations of fishermen for more than three decades, and careful resource management has ensured that the fishing today is as good or better than it was three decades ago.

Renovations to the fishing lodge include accommodations for 12 guests in six modern double-occupancy (non-smoking) bedrooms, each equipped with private shower, toilet and sink. Entry through our "mud room" allows anglers to leave waders, vests, and equipment in a secure area where wet clothes can dry out and fishing gear is safely stored.

The fully equipped and staffed kitchen is also new, containing all modern conveniences and appliances for preparation of tasty meals. The two-story, double "A" frame main building has a common area for dining and socializing on the main floor. A second lounge upstairs is our designated smoking area where one can relax with an after-dinner drink, or tie flies on the fishing lodgersquo;s fly tying bench in preparation for the next day’s adventure.

Best Times to Go

The lodge fishes well from June to August.
