INDIA FISHING HOLIDAYS- MAHSEER FISHING IN THE HIMALAYAS
|
|
The western Ramganga River enters the tiger reserve and it is separated into four beats that offer fisherman an opportunity to fish in this well protected and completely unique fly-fishing environment. These beats present unique sight-fishing opportunities with similarities to the New Zealand style of fishing. Large Himalayan Mahseer can be individually spotted and sight-fished for. Compared to some of the larger rivers such ad the Saryu the Ramganga River is more suited to a sturdy single or a short double handed rod. Presentation and stealth can be more important and fishing early morning and late evening is often the most productive. Although the walks up and down the riverbank are not arduous anglers do have to be of a reasonable level of fitness to get the most of the fishing.

The Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve has been described by many as one of the most prolific eco-systems of the Indian sub-continent. Enriching this land of the royal Bengal tiger is the emerald green, boulder-strewn western Ramganga River and its tributaries that cascade through its eastern periphery. The river runs through the Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve and one of the highlights of this trip is that anglers are allowed to fish inside the Tiger reserve from November 15th through April. This is a truly stunning eco-system that is host to one of the highest concentrations of the Royal Bengal Tiger. Trails along the river-bank are common place and if you are lucky you may well catch a glimpse of one.

Any remote fishing lodge can confidently say that they offer an experience however a trip to India is a step beyond most. Mahseer fishing in the Himalayas is far more than a fishing trip. You will be immersed in the local culture and surrounded by astounding scenery and wildlife. This is a chance to see and experience remote Northern India in all its beauty. On your journey some of what you see may be shocking, all will be eye-opening and enlightening and most of all it will be a true adventure.

During your stay you will be hosted by the Himalayan Outback who have made it their mission to know more about Mahseer fishing in Northern India than anyone else. Most of the trips are hosted by Misty Dhillon who has either hosted or advised most of the well-known TV programmes and celebrity Mahseer anglers who have fished these waters. The emphasis during your trip is on colonial style comfort. In terms of manpower you are unlikely to find an operation with quite as many dedicated staff on hand to assist you. At times you will probably wonder what they are all doing however this is India and manpower is in ample supply! Each fisher will have an individual and highly experienced guide who will be able to assist with all aspects of your trip.

Anglers stay in individual cottages, constructed from locally sourced materials and decked out in colonial style comfort with British colonial campaign style furnishings that includes a rose wood bed, dressing tables, chairs, cupboard and luggage rack. Each cottage has a private veranda and sitting area overlooking the river as well as an ensuite bathroom with running water. An additional camp is set up down river to provide convenient access to some of the lower beats.
Meals are served in the main dining area and a variety of continental and local Tandoori cuisine is on offer including freshly baked bread, pies and cakes, all set amidst a breathtaking backdrop of the lower Himalayan ranges.
