Angling Report – Subscriber Review of Owen River Lodge –June 2011
Angling Report Subscriber Joe Burton of Port Moresby, Papua, New Guinea, has nothing but good things to say about his weeklong stay this past March at Owen River Lodge on the South Island of New Zealand. "I caught more than 25 brown trout in five days guided fishing" he writes. "These were beautiful, broad-shouldered fish in prime condition. The largest fish I caught weighed more than six pounds. I also caught several five pounders and many three to four pounders. Only a few weighed less than three pounds." Burton says he did all of his fishing by wading four different rivers, all of them near the lodge. "Almost all the fishing was sight casting to ghost-like shadows that moved back and forth in the blue-green currents or hung suspended near dark rocks," he writes lyrically.

"This was an outstanding fishing trip. I had the most amazing fishing I have ever experienced. The beauty of the rivers and surrounding countryside was awe-inspiring. The lodge owner/manager, Felix Borenstein, was a superlative host. My guide Pete was incredibly patient, found fish with the precision of an eagle, and offered much-needed suggestions for improvement with quiet resolve." Burton gives the cost of his stay at Owen River Lodge as about $3,500. He warmly recommends the experience to fellow subscribers.
